Overview
People who receive business text messages must have a way to stop receiving messages. This is commonly called an opt out or revocation of consent. Your organization is responsible for making sure applicable opt out requests are handled correctly.
Common opt out keywords
Standard text message opt out keywords include:
- STOP
- QUIT
- END
- REVOKE
- OPT OUT
- CANCEL
- UNSUBSCRIBE
Make opt out instructions clear
Recipients should not have to guess how to stop receiving messages. When appropriate for your texting program, messages should contain clear instructions such as: Reply STOP to opt out.
Do not work around an opt out
Do not attempt to get around an applicable opt out by:
- Using another texting number
- Adding the number back without appropriate new consent
- Continuing to send messages because your organization considers them important
Use another appropriate communication method when necessary.
What if someone wants to receive texts again?
Make sure appropriate consent is obtained again before resuming messages. Your organization should also maintain appropriate records showing that the person chose to receive messages again.
Important note about different message types
Consent and opt out requirements can vary based on whether a message is informational or marketing related.
New FCC rules taking effect November 25, 2026 allow certain informational opt outs to be treated as applying only to that category of informational messages. Marketing opt outs continue to have broader consequences for future marketing communications.
Because these requirements can be complex, do not make assumptions about whether an opt out can be ignored for another type of message.
How PropertyBoss Helps Manage Opt Outs
PropertyBoss provides built in options that allow recipients to opt out of text messaging and maintains their texting preferences in the system.
This means your organization does not need to manually create or maintain the opt out process provided through PropertyBoss.
Your responsibility is to respect the recipient's choice. If someone has opted out, do not attempt to continue applicable texting, remove their opt out preference, or use another number to work around the request.
If someone asks your organization to stop texting through another method, such as by phone, email, or a direct conversation, your organization is responsible for making sure that request is handled appropriately.
