ACH (Automated Clearing House) Reversals occur when a payer's bank reverses a payment. The payment processor does NOT initiate the reversal, and it only reports the reversal reason provided by the payer's bank. The payer will need to contact their financial institution for more information regarding the reversal.  


Common Reasons for ACH Reversals

  • R01: Non-sufficient funds.
  • R02 :Account closed.
  • R03: No account on file. Unable to locate account.
  • R04: Invalid account number.
  • R06: Returned at bank's request.
  • R07: Authorization has been revoked by receiver.
  • R08: Payment has been stopped.
  • R09: Insufficient collected funds in account being charged.
  • R10: Customer advises not authorized.
  • R16: Account funds have been frozen.
  • R20: Non-transaction account.  Either the account does not allow ACH transactions or the limit for the  number of transactions has been exceeded.
  • R29: Corporate customer advises not authorized.

 

Other Reversal Reasons


  • R05: Unauthorized debit to consumer account using corporate SEC code.
  • R11: Check truncation return.
  • R12: Branch sold to another financial institution (retired routing/transit number).
  • R13: Receiving Depository Financial Institution is not an ACH member.
  • R14: Representative payee deceased or no longer able to continue in that capacity.
  • R15: Beneficiary or account holder other than representative payee deceased.
  • R17: Item returned because of invalid data; refer to the addenda for information.
  • R18: Improper effective date.
  • R19: Amount field error: a prenote's dollar amount is not zero, or a non-prenote item's dollar amount is zero.
  • R21: Invalid company identification.
  • R22: Invalid individual ID number.
  • R23: Payment refused by biller.
  • R24: Duplicate entry.
  • R25: Addenda record error.
  • R26: Mandatory field error.
  • R27: Trace number error.
  • R28: Routing/transit number check digit error.
  • R30: Receiver not participant in check truncation program.
  • R31: Permissible return entry.
  • R32: Receiving Depository Financial Institution non-settlement.
  • R33: Return of item.
  • R34: Limited participation Originating Depository Financial Institution.
  • R35: Return of improper debit entry.
  • R36: Return of improper credit entry.
  • R37: Source document presented for payment.
  • R38: Stop payment on source document.
  • R39: Improper source document.
  • R40: Return of item by government agency.
  • R41: Invalid transaction code.
  • R42: Routing/transit number check digit error.
  • R43: Invalid account number.
  • R44: Invalid individual ID.
  • R45: Invalid individual name or company name.
  • R46: Invalid representative payee indicator code.
  • R47: Duplicate enrollment.
  • R50: State law affecting RCK acceptance.
  • R51: Item is ineligible, notice not provided, signature not genuine, or original item altered for adjustment entry.
  • R52: Stop payment on this item.
  • R53: Item and ACH entry presented for payment.
  • R61: Misrouted item--Receiving Depository Financial Institution for original entry has placed incorrect routing/transit number in RDFI identification field.
  • R62: Incorrect trace number. Trace number of addenda record for return entry is different than original entry.
  • R63: Incorrect dollar amount. The dollar amount for return entry is different than original entry.
  • R64: Incorrect individual identification. Individual ID number for return entry is different than original entry.
  • R65: Incorrect transaction code.
  • R66: Incorrect company identification. Company ID number for return entry is different than original entry.
  • R67: Duplicate return. Received more than one return for an entry.
  • R68: Untimely return. The return was not sent within established timeframe.
  • R69: Multiple error return. The return contains multiple errors.
  • R70: Permissible return entry not accepted.
  • R71: Misrouted dishonored return. An incorrect routing and/or transit number was placed in the Receiving Depository Financial Institution (RDFI) identification field.
  • R72: Untimely return. The dishonored return was not sent within established timeframe.
  • R73: Timely original return. RDFI certifies that original return entry was sent within established timeframe for original returns.
  • R74: Corrected return. RDFI is correcting a previous return entry that was dishonored because it contained incomplete or incorrect information.
  • R75: Original return not a duplicate.
  • R76: No errors found.
  • R80: Cross-border payment coding error.
  • R81: Non-participant in cross-border program.
  • R82: Invalid foreign receiving depository financial institution identification.
  • R83: Foreign receiving depository financial institution unable to settle.
  • R84: Entry not processed by OGO.
  • R98: A returned PAC (pre-authorized check); the Receiving Depository Financial Institution has not provided a text reason and indicated a new account number on the PAC itself.
  • R99: A returned PAC (pre-authorized check); Receiving Depository Financial Institution provided a text reason on the PAC itself for which there is no equivalent ACH return reason code.
