In some situations, PropertyBoss needs a folder or shared network location to be accessible through a Windows drive letter, such as P:, S:, or Z:. Mapping the folder to a drive letter allows Windows and PropertyBoss to recognize it as a standard drive location. This may be necessary when working with:

  • QuickBooks interface files
  • NACHA files
  • Files stored on a server or shared network location
  • Documents that need to be attached or accessed through PropertyBoss

Before You Begin

Make sure you know the location of the folder you want to map. A network folder path commonly looks like this:

\\ServerName\SharedFolder

You must also have permission to access the folder from the computer where PropertyBoss is being used.

Important: If you do not know the folder path or do not have the required permissions, contact the person who manages your network or server before continuing.

Step 1: Open File Explorer

  • Open File Explorer on the Windows computer.
  • To open File Explorer using your keyboard, press: Windows Key + E

Step 2: Open This PC

  • In the navigation pane on the left, select This PC.
  • The drives and network locations currently available on the computer will appear.

Step 3: Select Map Network Drive

  • Select Map network drive.
  • Depending on your version of Windows, you may need to:
    • Select the three dot menu (...) at the top of File Explorer.
    • Select Map network drive.

Step 4: Choose a Drive Letter

Use the Drive dropdown to select an available letter. Common examples include:

  • P:
  • S:
  • Z:

The specific letter normally does not matter as long as it is not already assigned to another drive.

Step 5: Enter the Folder Location

In the Folder field, enter the path to the shared folder. For example:

\\ServerName\SharedFolder

  • If you do not know the exact path, select Browse and locate the appropriate network folder.

Step 6: Reconnect the Drive at Sign In

  • Select Reconnect at sign in.
  • This setting allows Windows to reconnect the mapped drive when you sign back into the computer.

Step 7: Complete the Mapping

  • Select Finish.
  • Windows will attempt to connect to the folder. If you are prompted for credentials, enter the username and password authorized to access the network location.

Step 8: Verify the Mapped Drive

  • Return to: File Explorer > This PC
  • The mapped folder should appear with the drive letter you selected.
    • For example: SharedFolder (Z:)
  • Open the drive and confirm that you can access the appropriate folders and files.

Use the Mapped Drive with PropertyBoss

Once the drive has been successfully mapped:

  1. Close or log out of PropertyBoss.
  2. If you are working in a hosted environment, log out of the hosted session as appropriate.
  3. Log back in.
  4. Return to the area of PropertyBoss where you need to browse for or save a file.
  5. Locate the newly mapped drive letter. For example: Z:\

You can then browse to the appropriate folder within that drive.

Important: Mapping a drive on your local computer does not automatically make it available inside a hosted or remote environment. If you cannot see the drive in your hosted session, contact your network administrator, IT provider, or hosting provider for assistance.

Troubleshooting

The mapped drive does not appear in PropertyBoss

  • First, confirm that the drive appears under This PC in Windows.
  • If the drive appears in Windows but not in PropertyBoss:
    • Close PropertyBoss completely.
    • Reopen PropertyBoss.
  • Return to the file selection area.
  • Check the available drive locations again.

If you are using PropertyBoss in a hosted or remote environment, confirm that the drive is also available within that environment.

The drive appears disconnected

  1. Open File Explorer > This PC, and then double click the mapped drive to reconnect it.
  2. If Windows cannot reconnect, confirm that:
    • The computer is connected to the appropriate network.
    • The server or shared computer is available.
    • You have permission to access the folder.
    • The network folder path is correct.
    • A required VPN connection is active.

Windows asks for a username and password

  • The shared folder may require network credentials.
  • Enter the credentials provided by your network administrator or IT provider. If you do not know the appropriate credentials, contact the person who manages your network or server.

The drive letter is already being used

  • Select another available drive letter. For example, if Z: is already assigned, you could use P: or S: instead.

The mapped drive disappears after restarting the computer

  • Confirm that Reconnect at sign in was selected when the drive was mapped.
  • You may also need to connect to your company network or VPN before Windows can reconnect to the shared folder.

Important Information

  • Mapping a drive does not move or copy any files. It creates a connection in Windows to the folder where the files are already stored.
  • After completing the mapping, confirm that the drive is accessible in Windows. Then restart PropertyBoss or log back in so the newly mapped drive can be recognized.
